"The elements force the melodies here into crooked growth. Each track on Giant Tadpoles Among Us carries a sort of phototropic slant; set on a giddy diagonal by the field recording confetti (cascades of sucked in words crafted from reversed conversation, wooden scrapes and impact tacked together into an organic typewriter mechanism) that swirls around and blots out large chunks of stereo space, leaving the guitars and voices to rise and swerve toward the sun along jaunty (but unavoidable) routes. The arrangements are pliable, comprised of a compositional bamboo that arches and diverges without snapping the pieces into dissociative ambient fragments, and even with the other rhythms and tonal activity that crumples against the bowed and bent totem core, I see each of this nine tracks as songs; boxed up constructions of beat and melody into which I read a loose, yet undoubtedly coherent, desire to communicate.
There’s something autumnal about it – the commencement of transient disconnection and loose debris tumbling down from the trees. The linear is dislodged ever so slightly, and there is a commotion in the album’s offsetting of place and chronology – sounds of the playground are blown forcefully into isolated patches of woodland and left to babble and loop, while house keys sway and jangle into guitars caught in a quivering, hyperventilated strum, forming mutually operative rhythms that slide gently out of parallel. I feel threatened by the way in which synchronicity peels apart – distrusting of the floor that cracks and shifts beneath me, clinging on helpless to the song that tries to assert itself: the one gravitated singularity in amongst the sound that jostles and wavers like tethered balloons."

"Ik las ergens de volgende zinsnede: 'there's something autumnal about this cd'. Da's echt het understatement van het jaar! Ik ben niet zo'n suïcidaal typetje maar jongens toch, wat zou ik na het beluisteren van deze plaat een zin hebben om met een sierlijke zweefduik op het traject Haarlem-Leiden terecht te komen, net voordat de trein van 06.58 richting Laan van NOI optrekt tot 140 km per uur! Waarschijnlijk bedoelt de man dat de herfst in zijn optiek gelijk staat aan de Sombermans Acties die beklijven na het beluisteren van deze cd. Ergens is het ook wel weer prachtig. Zeker in het ingetogen pianowerk dat afgewisseld wordt met de haast falset-gespeelde gitaarpartij. Lend Me Your Underbelly ademt zwartgalligheid als 'n sinistere Jacco Gardner die verborgen songs van Syd Barrett bij The Velvet Underground heeft ontdekt. Soms psychedelisch en bezwerend, soms verzonken in gitzwarte gedachten en soms zo dromerig als je eerste bewuste nachtrust na twee weken coma. Lend Me Your Underbelly is het soloproject van de Utrechter Christian Berends die je wellicht kent als gitarist Harfst-Ruus van de blackmetalband Salacious Gods of als bassist van rockband Downburst. Een ding weet ik zeker, als Lars van Trier ooit nog eens een gitzwarte bewerking gaat maken van Melancholia, dan moet hij onbetwist aankloppen bij Berends. Het kan niet anders of alleen hij is in staat om een soundtrack af te leveren die de waan van alledag doet vergeten. In de tussentijd zou hij dit werk eens kunnen voorleggen aan de heren van Motorpsycho, die zullen versteld staan."

"Er komen vreemde klanken uit mijn luidsprekers. Ik hoor stemmen van winkelende mensen, ruis, een sterk vervormde gitaar en een stem die zingt, maar die ik bijna niet kan verstaan vanwege diezelfde gitaar die er ineens dwars doorheen koerst. Kortom ik luister naar 'Giant Tadpoles Among Us'.
Dit intrigerende album van Lend Me Your Underbelly, het pseudoniem van Christian Berends, heb ik nu reeds meerdere keren geluisterd en iedere keer vallen er weer andere zaken op. Het is typisch zo'n album waar je maar geen vat op krijgt, omdat alles wat je gewend bent te horen er niet is. En wat je dan wel hoort, dat associeer je nu niet direct met muziek en zeker niet met popmuziek. Maar laten we maar gelijk zeggen waar het op staat: dat maakt deze plaat nu net zo interessant.
En dat komt allereerst door de opbouw van de nummers. Er zit weinig coherentie binnen een song. Net als je denkt er een beetje in te zitten, er grip op te hebben, doet Lend Me Your Underbelly iets totaal anders. De elementen versterken elkaar onderling wel maar de verbinding openbaart zich pas na meerdere keren luisteren..."
